We’ll probably hear more about it at CES, but for now it’s said to have a 5MP camera, wifi, bluetooth, possibly wifi calling, a new version of MotoBlur. Soooo pretty much the same thing as the old CLIQ, except somehow they managed to make the keyboard even uglier. I owned the original CLIQ. While it was an upgrade from the aging T-Mobile G1, it was still a worthless handset, and this looks to be shaping up to be more of the same. I really pity the uninformed person that buys this.

AndroidTapp has a list of their top 5 worst Android phones of 2010. Including the Sanyo Zio, Motorola BackFlip, Garminfone, Motorola FlipOut and the Dell Streak. I’m inclined to agree with most of these choices. The odd form factors of the BackFlip and the Streak to the niche market of the Garminfone are why they make the list. Alongside the general cheapness of the Sanyo Zio. I’m gonna give Motorola a pass for being on the list twice. When you pump out as many Android phones as they have this year, you’re bound to have a few duds in there. *cough* MOTOBLUR *cough* There’s a place in the market for budget phones, but there’s no reason the phone has to suck. HTC knows how to pull it off with models like the Aria or Wildfire. And LG seems to be doing great with their Optimus line.

What do you think? All these phones deserving of the list? Anything else deserving honorable mention for just being an all around bad phone?

Don’t feel like waiting a couple more days for the official update to be released? Of course not, so we got you covered.

First off, you’re gonna need the update file, grab it here.

Now, if you downloaded it on your computer, connect your phone via USB and copy the file to the root directory of your SD card, not inside any sub-directories. If you downloaded it on your phone, use a file manager application to move it from “/downloads” to “/”.

At this point Motorola recommends doing a power cycle. So turn your phone off then turn it on again.

Are we back? Ok great. Now the fun part. Go to Settings > About Phone > Check For Updates. If you have the file in the correct location, and the exact filename is Blur_Version.3.0.1390.MB300.ATT.en.US.zip then your phone should start displaying installation instructions. Yes, it will take a while, don’t freak out if your phone is stuck on the carrier logo screen for 10 minutes, this is normal. When the update is done, your Backflip will reboot. Then you can login to MotoBlur again and get all synced up.

And it’s already been confirmed that the update is fully rootable using Visionary, available in the Android Market.

But next week, there will be a few smiles to be had, because the official release date for the long-awaited Android 2.1 upgrade is November 9th. Yesterday began the volunteer testing of 1000 users, and hopefully there will be no major snags. There will be no OTA update, customers will have to download the update from Motorola and connect their device to their computer to update the firmware.

There is a zero to none chance of the Backflip seeing Android 2.2 in its lifetime.

From a translated internal Motorola document, we have the specs (below), a hint at a June availability, and the codename “Twist”, which may indicate that’s it’s not a slider, but a twist open, like the Nokia 7705 Twist.

And the specs include:

Android 2.1 (Flash) with 1.5 Motoblur

OMAP 3410 700MHz

512 MB ROM

256 RAM

WCDMA / HSPA: 850/1900, GSM / EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900

microSD card slot

2.8-inch 320×240 screen QVGA

3 megapixel camera

Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi

3.5 mm Headphone Jack

Browser with Flash support and multi-touch

940 mAh battery

Obviously very low end specs, don’t expect this to be a killer handset, but more of a teen-texter phone and an excuse to buy your kid some an Android. I imagine multi-touch would be near impossible on such as small screen except for those with small hands.

We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge, such as carrier and pricing info.

The story goes that some guy that works for Motorola had the prototype, and let his kid borrow it. Kid takes it to school and a fried snapped the picture you see above.

Well the story is pretty much irrelevant, as we’re more interested in what Motorola has around the corner for Android. From the picture, we can tell that it’s a MotoBlur device, like the Backflip and Cliq. We can also easily see that it’s a square slider with a full QWERTY keyboard, reminiscent of fugly LG Lotus. The word is that it will be running Android 2.1, but other details are really sparse.

A recent PowerPoint slide (shown below) revealed that the Motorola Zeppelin (shown above), named the CLIQ XT should be coming to T-Mobile USA launching on March 10th. It’s been described as a “CLIQ without a keyboard”, and should appeal to users that want MotoBLUR, but in a much slimmer design. Specs include MOTOBLUR running on 1.5 (why oh why?), a 3.2-inch HVGA screen, GPS, 5 MP camera with flash, and touch sensitive trackpad and navigational buttons. The price point is rumored to be at or below the current CLIQ, making it an attractive option for new smartphone buyers that don’t need to the high end specs of more expensive models.

I’m sure many of you have already seen it. But for those of you that haven’t, I recommend you read BGR’s preview of the Motorola CLIQ. Overall, it throws out some very good info about the phone and it’s software. A few negative points here and there, which may or may not be attributed to preproduction software and/or hardware. I’m hoping the final version does have these things fixed, because I’m very excited about the Moto CLIQ. I would like more info on the battery life though. It was a major drawback on the T-Mobile G1, and could potentially cripple the potential of the CLIQ. I wouldn’t say the review is negative, BGR is always very objective. Hit the read link for all the goodies and plenty of pictures.
