Rounding out the trio of new HTC “One series” phones is the HTC One V, the entry level model slotted below the One S and One X. Although the specs are not as impressive as its two bigger brothers, don’t let that fool you, the One V shares some of the best features of the other One phones.

The HTC One V features 3.7-inch 480×800 display, 1 GHz single-core processor, 512 MB of RAM, Android 4.0 (with Sense 3.6), 4 GB of internal storage plus 25GB of free Dropbox cloud storage for two years, Beats Audio, and a 5 MP camera that shoots 720p video (as opposed to 8MP and 1080p in the other two devices). However the One V does sport the same camera technology that’s in the other One series devices, with fast image processing and superior low-light applications.

Rounding out the specs is Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi b/g/n, 1500 mAh battery and a microSD card slot.

The looks and aesthetics of the One V remind us strongly of the HTC Hero and the HTC Legend. The jutting “Android chin” on the bottom is prominent, but not as awkward as it was on the Hero.

The One V is said to be launching in Europe during the second quarter of this year for a very wallet-friendly price. And unlike the One X and One S, the One V has not been announced by any US carriers as of yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it show up in one form or another.

US Cellular announced today a trio of new Android devices soon landing on the network. The HTC Wildfire S, HTC Hero S and the HTC Flyer tablet. Two of those devices you will recognize as already announced on other carriers, while you may already know the HTC Hero name.

The HTC Hero S is the device long rumored as the HTC Kingdom that was earlier spotted on some US Cellular marketing material. It features a 4 inch Super LCD display with qHD resolution, a (single-core) 1.2Ghz Snapdragon processor, 768MB of RAM, Android 2.3 with HTC Sense, 5MP camera and VGA front shooter. The Hero S will run you $199 after a $100 rebate and two year contract and will be available next month.

The HTC Wildfire S has already launched on T-Mobile and in Europe, but now it’s coming to US Cellular. It’s a pint sized device with low end specs, but for many it will be more than enough. It has a 3.2 inch TFT display with 320×480 resolution, 600Mhz processor, 5MP camera and Android 2.3 with HTC Sense. The Wildfire S will be available in black or purple for only $80 after $100 rebate and two year contract.

And finally, there’s the HTC Flyer, the 7 inch tablet. While it’s currently running Android 2.3 with a tablet version of Sense, a Honeycomb build is in the works. It has a 7-inch 1024×600 TFT display, 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor with 1GB RAM, 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera. The Flyer will also be available next month for $399 after $100 mail-in-rebate and two year contract.

Looks like US Cellular has another HTC handset headed their way. The HTC Kingdom, which will be called the HTC Hero S when it lands on the carrier. Shown here next to the Motorola Electrify (aka Photon 4G), which was announced by US Cellular earlier this month. The Hero S will feature a single-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4 inch qHD display, and a 5 megapixel camera (with VGA front shooter). Seeing as how there’s already marketing material out there, we’d expect it to launch in the next month or so.

What would seem like a case of vaporware on the scale of something like Duke Nukem Forever, the Android 2.1 Eclair update for the GSM version of the HTC Hero has suffered endless delays, empty promises and rumors. Orange just issued a statement saying they hope to begin rolling it out next week:

“We apologise for the delay in Orange Hero customers receiving their Éclair update. Testing the update across European markets took longer than anticipated. However, we hope to receive final approval by the end of the week and Orange handsets should start updating from next week.”

The HTC Hero that was released in Europe and other parts of the world, the GSM verson is one of the oldest Android phones around. It was the hottest thing when it came out and seems to be neglected in terms of software updates, leaving a lot of owners upset. With no word from HTC or carriers on a 2.1 upgrade, the hackers have come to the rescue. The upgrade was actually released by Chungwa Telecom in Taiwan, but I think the majority of Hero users don’t live there, so it’s been released as a rooted ROM for you. Head over to xda-developers for all the downloads. And as always with these sort of things, be aware you could brick your phone. And if you’re not experienced at reflashing your phone, please do some research.

From the information provided by this internal communication at Best Buy, it appears that HTC Hero owners will finally be getting the long-promised upgrade to Android 2.1 starting this Friday, May 7th. This isn’t a simple OTA update, push a button on your phone and done, but it appears the upgrade must be done in a Best Buy store, possibly also a Sprint store, or via a download from the HTC website. We’ll have details and links for you on Friday if this turns out to be true.

Still just a rumor at this point, since no specific date has been announced, but it looks like Sprint is aiming at early May to upgrade HTC Hero and Samsung Moment handsets to Android 2.1 according to these screenshots. Even though both have already been rooted and 2.1 hacked onto them, this will be the official deal here. And it looks like they’re holding to their promise of 2010 Q2. Keep your fingers crossed and we’ll let you know when the time comes around and guide you through the upgrade.

Now there’s the same for owners of the Sprint Hero and Samsung Behold 2. For the Hero, there’s a thread over at xda-developers with clear instructions on how to Root your Sprint Hero. Not much yet in the way of custom ROMS or other goodies, but you can run applications that require superuser such as wireless tethering.

For Samsung Behold 2 owners, head over to All Droid for your rooting instructions.

I don’t have either of these handsets, so I can test myself, but if anyone successfully roots (or doesn’t), let us know in the comments how it went. And as always with hacking and modifying your phone, do so at your own risk.

[Thanks Ted for the tip on the Behold 2]

Perhaps a bit steep at $6.99 just for a theme, but Elecite has a HTC Hero, Sense UI theme for your Blackberry Bold, Storm, Tour and 8900 series device. But if you’re locked into a Blackberry for the foreseeable future, this might be the only way to get your Android fix. Here’s the full details on the theme, and check out the video below for a full demo of what you’re dishing out 7 bucks for:
