Didn’t get your Donut 1.6 update yet? Here’s how to manually update

October 2nd, 2009

T-Mobile has started their OTA rollout of the Android 1.6 Donut update. We’ve all been anxiously waiting, but if you don’t feel like waiting anymore, here’s how to do the update manually:

  1. Download the update file here for the G1. And here for the myTouch 3G.
  2. Rename the file update.zip and copy it to the root directory of your SD card. If you are on Windows and have file extensions hidden, then just name it update.
  3. After the file is copied, unmount the SD card and turn off you phone. Turn it back on by holding HOME+END.
  4. It will boot into a special update screen, then press Alt+S to apply the update from your SD card.
  5. Wait till it finishes, then hit HOME+BACK to reboot
  6. The bootup will take longer than normal, just let it finish.
  7. Enjoy some tasty Donuts!

A quick note, you do not have to have your phone rooted to update, but if you are rooted, this update will lose your root access. Questions, comments, issues? Let us know in the comments.

UPDATE: A reader wrote in with the process for myTouch owners:

There is no need to root or flash from a computer and upgrading is just as easy as with the G1. Put the update.zip file on the SD card, hold home+power until you get to the screen with the exclamation mark in a triangle. Once at that screen just press home+power again. It will take you to the recovery screen where you can use the trackball to to select “update from sd card”.

Donut clouds are in the sky, and it’s starting to sprinkle on T-Mobile customers

October 1st, 2009

All cheesy post titles aside, TmoNews is reporting that T-Mobile US is starting to deliver OTA Donut (Android 1.6) updates to select G1 handsets as of midnight last night, and select myTouch handsets later on tonight. As with the previous Cupcake update, it’s very slow at first, presumably to catch and issues before everyone can be affected. And if all goes well, everyone (excluding rooted, custom ROM phones) will get a delicious box of Donuts in their inbox. It comes as no surprise since they updated the My Account application just last night to be Donut-compatible.

Drop us a comment if you have gotten an update yet, or if you haven’t and just want to share your excitement. And we’ll keep you posted once we dig up a link to the official firmware for those wishing to do manual updates.

And in case you’ve been under a rock, here’s what the update brings:

  • An improved Android Market experience that makes it easier to discover great applications.
  • An integrated camera, camcorder, and gallery interface.
  • Updated Voice Search, with faster response and deeper integration with native applications, including the ability to dial contacts.
  • Updated search experience that make it easier to search various sources, such as browser bookmarks & history, contacts, music, and the web, directly from the home screen.

*UPDATE* There’s now an official announcement on the T-Mobile forums.

Full HTC Hero ROM Released

June 1st, 2009

If you were drooling all over the demo videos and you wanna take the plunge and play with the HTC Hero firmware, it’s the latest hot topic over at xda-developers. Redone user interface changes inside and out, and a host of custom HTC applications, this is the future of Android and much better over a stock 1.5 build in my opinion. I’m actually surprised to see the firmware out before the actual device even is released.

Leave a comment if you decided to try it out and let us know what you think. Or feel free to comment if you bricked your phone.

Playing Around With HTC Hero Android Beta Firmware On The G1

May 28th, 2009

First off, some delicious screenshots grabbed from xda-developers:

Ok, I would like to say, this is a beta version. Some things do not work. Do not ask how to install this, because I do not feel like answering questions when something goes wrong. If you’re thirsty for this, go hang out over at xda-developers and follow the threads. That said, let’s get to the juicy bits.

In addition to all the wonderful things that are packed with the G1 cupcake, this version (still 1.5) has some additional goodies that you won’t be seeing from T-Mobile or Rogers. These is pure HTC additions from what I can tell. This is also probably pretty close to what we’ll be seeing on the HTC Hero when it’s released, rumored to be locked in exclusively to Orange.

I’ll try to keep this short, since this isn’t meant to be an in-depth review.

Some key features:

  • There is no “Rosie” included. No word on if it will come as part of the complete OS when the Hero ships. But this may be part of the Personalize section in the Settings that I could see, but nothing in it worked. (“Choose a lifestyle to set widget layout”)
  • 5 Home screens.
  • Much longer initial setup, including choosing language and setup of Exchange accounts and Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.
  • The previous mentioned Social Network services are integrated in with your contacts for getting their updates and sharing items. It matches Facebook friends to your contacts and you can link pictures and birthdays. View Facebook status updates straight from you Android phonebook! I could not get the Twitter or Flickr to work.
  • Contacts is now People. Visual makeover. Scrolling has that iPhone “bounce” effect. There’s a cool slider bar at the bottom to check messages, email, updates & events, FaceBook and Flickr photos, and of course call history.
  • Text messaging: A bit of a visual makeover here. A nice Compose Message button at the top of your conversations list. And I’m really digging the fact that it uses the contact icon next to the message.
  • Calendar: Another awesome visual makeover. Looks a lot better than the old version. There’s a screenshot floating around, you know the one that uses the iPhone icon, yeah, it’s there.
  • Dialer is the one from the other HTC roms that we’ve seen coming from Haykuro with a couple of tweak, nothing major here.
  • Lock screen shows the current open app behind it instead of wallpaper. You can also choose lockscreen wallpaper, but that feature was broken.
  • HTC Footprints app is included and working fine for me. Geotag photos and save your favorite places.
  • Music player makeover with album artwork and slick working “swipe to switch tracks” interface. I love this feature.
  • The web browser: Ooh, the browser. Little tweaks to the location bar and loading bar, all these minor tweaks make the whole phone feel much more polished. The bookmarks are what people are gonna love. No more boring list of URLs, now you have small preview pages “Visual Bookmarks” ans it’s named, and you can swipe sideways to scroll through. Also the same when switching between browser windows. Very cool stuff here. Full-screen browsing. Zooming of any sort did not seem to work in this build.
  • Option in the Settings to calibrate the G-Sensor.
  • Option to auto-download firmware, prompt, or never download.

Well, that’s about all I have. It’s 7:00amEST and I’ve been up all night. I’m going to keep playing with this and maybe post more. At the very least more screenshots. Tell me what you want to see!

Update: Yes, I know this isn’t finished. And those of you that follow xda closely will know exactly what’s going on. I just report the news, I don’t make it. The kids just want to see what all the fuss is about.

T-Mobile Cupcake Rollout Pushed Back A Week

May 18th, 2009

Fresh from the T-Mobile forums, looks like the OTA Cupcake 1.5 rollout is being pushed back “approximately a week”. No specifics on what the hold up is, probably some minor technical issue specific to T-Mobile, such as MyFaves. Hopefully this won’t piss too many people off. But if you’re feeling frisky and you can’t wait for T-Mobile, you can always upgrade yourself.

Haykuro Teases Us With HTC Hero 1.5 Firmware [Screenshots and Video]

May 17th, 2009

Some juicy details on the HTC Hero firmware just got posted over at xda-developers by Haykuro in the form of screenshots and a video. No word on if this is going to be available anytime soon, but the overall more polished look is very enticing, although nothing really groundbreaking from the other 1.5 firmwares out right now. Haykuro says he won’t be releasing this for legal reasons, so we can only hope the HTC Hero will be dropping on a carrier sometime soon.

ADP 1.1 Firmware Released, Access To (some) Paid Apps Allowed

March 10th, 2009

Finally catching up with the rest of the Android world, Google has released 1.1 firmware for the Android Developer’s Phone.  As well as bug fixes for alarm clock, device sleep, POP3 email, and email notification, there is also now support for some paid applications.

From the Android Developer’s Blog:

Some developers have asked about the support for copy-protected apps on developer devices, and indeed there is a limitation you should be aware of. Many developers are concerned about the unauthorized redistribution of their applications, so they make use of the copy-protection feature (known as “forward locking”) which prevents applications from being copied off devices. However, developer phones like the ADP1 allow for unrestricted access to the device’s contents, making it impossible to enforce copy protection. As a result, the Market application on such devices is not able to access copy protected apps, whether they are free or paid.
