Boy Genius Report has discovered a major security flaw in the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II. Users that employ a pattern or a PIN to lock their phone may not be as secure as they believe. Normally the lockscreen is used to prevent unauthorized people from accessing the device till they enter the correct pattern on the 3×3 grid of dots, or the correct PIN password. It has been discovered, however, that on the AT&T Galaxy S II it can be bypassed.

If you hit the power button to turn on the screen, you are presented with the pattern or PIN screen. Once the screen times out, hit the power button again and the lock is gone, you have access to the phone. It’s said the exploit only works if the phone has been unlocked successfully at least once since it was powered on. And it’s currently unclear if it affects every single handset. Users with Microsoft Exchange security policies do not seem to be affected.

Of course, it’s an obvious software bug and can be fixed with a simple OTA update. How soon Samsung and AT&T can get the update to handsets is still up in the air. The Galaxy S II is only couple days away from release on October 2nd, so it’s doubtful the flaw will be fixed before then. Take a look at the video below to see how simple it is to bypass the security. And if you plan on picking up the Galaxy S II from AT&T, may we suggest a third-party lock screen app.

Boy Genius has just scooped this render of a yet-unnamed Samsung device headed to AT&T in the near future. It’s currently unknown if it will be a Galaxy S II variant (like the Epic 4G was) or if it’s just another mid-range device. But it’s certainly not the AT&T Galaxy S II that was accidentally outed on Facebook a few weeks ago.

The obvious major selling point will be the full QWERTY slide out keyboard. There are also 4 capacitive buttons instead of the usual 3, apparently at AT&T’s request, which are also mirrored on the hardware keyboard. The phone will be directly competing with the likes of Verizon’s freshly released Motorola Droid 3 and T-Mobile’s MyTouch 4G Slide.

Unfortunately there’s not much more to go on aside from this picture. It should be hitting AT&T within the next couple of months, but we’ll keep out eyes out for more details.

I’m sure many of you have already seen it. But for those of you that haven’t, I recommend you read BGR’s preview of the Motorola CLIQ. Overall, it throws out some very good info about the phone and it’s software. A few negative points here and there, which may or may not be attributed to preproduction software and/or hardware. I’m hoping the final version does have these things fixed, because I’m very excited about the Moto CLIQ. I would like more info on the battery life though. It was a major drawback on the T-Mobile G1, and could potentially cripple the potential of the CLIQ. I wouldn’t say the review is negative, BGR is always very objective. Hit the read link for all the goodies and plenty of pictures.
