How To: Root the Sprint HTC Hero and Samsung Behold 2

November 8th, 2009

Remember the excitement when the G1 was first rooted? Now there’s the same for owners of the Sprint Hero and Samsung Behold 2. For the Hero, there’s a thread over at xda-developers with clear instructions on how to Root your Sprint Hero. Not much yet in the way of custom ROMS or other goodies, but you can run applications that require superuser such as wireless tethering.

For Samsung Behold 2 owners, head over to All Droid for your rooting instructions.

I don’t have either of these handsets, so I can test myself, but if anyone successfully roots (or doesn’t), let us know in the comments how it went. And as always with hacking and modifying your phone, do so at your own risk.

[Thanks Ted for the tip on the Behold 2]

Samsung Moment coming to Sprint packing 800Mhz

October 8th, 2009

Samsung and Sprint announced the latest Android offering from both companies, the Samsung Moment. Available November 1st for $179.99 on a two year contract, undercutting Samsung’s latest offering from T-Mobile, the Behold 2, by $20. This is the device previously thought to be called the InstinctQ, but obviously they wanted to differentiate it from the Instinct lineup. Featuring a 3.2-inch AMOLED touch screen, slideout 4-row QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3.5MP camera with a flash, proximity sensor and accelerometer. But one of the most important specs is the 800Mhz processor, which makes this one of the best spec’d Android handsets to date. At least until the rumored 1Ghz HTC Dragon or the Sony Xperia X3 come onto the scene.

Anyone planning on passing on the HTC Hero to get the Samsung Moment?

Leaked pictures of the Samsung InstinctQ running Android

August 23rd, 2009

So far, little is known about the Samsung InstinctQ, but the guys over at Phandroid got their hands on some pictures. We know it is rumored to be coming to Sprint on or around October 11th, the same rumored release date of the HTC Hero on Sprint. The looks are more like the Instinct S30 or S50 than the original Instinct but with the addition of a D-pad and the Home and End keys found on other Android hardware. And we’re guessing the Q stands for that 4-row QWERTY sliding keyboard underneath. Overall thickness doesn’t seem to be too much greater, but it’s hard to tell from the pictures. Unless by some odd chance, the Motorola Morrison comes out first, this would be the second Android phone with a full QWERTY since the T-Mobile G1 was released. Now that the spy pictures are out, it’s only a matter of time before the specs start surfacing.

Rumor: HTC Hero and Samsung Q Android handsets launching on Sprint 10/11/09

August 4th, 2009

As the story goes, way back in April, a post over at xda-developers claimed the HTC Hero would be launching in the US on Oct 11th and everyone pretty much brushed it aside. Now we have a bit of photo “proof” from the same poster, which backs up what sounded like quite a wild claim back in April. Even though the HTC Hero has already cleared the FCC with AT&T 3G bands, it’s still not a far stretch that Sprint would carry HTC most advanced Android phone yet.

We also can see that something called the Samsung Q is set to launch the same day. But there’s no solid evidence at the moment exactly what that handset may be. Although some are speculating it could be the CDMA version of the Samsung Galaxy.

Android Ported To Samsung Omnia

June 28th, 2009

Still a work in progress, as are most of the Android porting projects going on right now, but it boots and that’s pretty much it as far I can tell from screenshots and some of the forum threads. Not surprising these talented people are working furiously, there’s currently a bounty to succesfully port Android to the Omnia. If you’re a developer or a Samsung Omnia user, check out the project here.

T-Mobile’s Upcoming Samsung “Bigfoot” Android Phone Pictured

June 11th, 2009

Boy Genius got his hands on the above picture of the upcoming Samsung Bigfoot slated to drop on T-Mobile sometime this Summer. Rumored specs include 3MP camera, T-Mobile’s 1700/2100 3G, and 3-inch capacitive AMOLED touch screen. BGR is also speculating GPS and WiFi.

I’m not so hot on the color scheme here, but I would assume T-Mobile wouldn’t be stupid enough to offer just this one color, more likely 2 or 3 different colors as with their previous Android offerings.

Samsung Houdini, Motorola Morrison, HTC Magic, G1v2 Bigfoot, oh my! [TMobile Roadmap]

May 21st, 2009

Some delicious news from a post over at TmoToday in the form of an updated T-Mobile 2009 Android roadmap. Showing the launch of the HTC Magic G2 this summer. And just as the life cycle for the G1 ends, QWERTY-lovers fear not, the G1 Version 2 “Bigfoot” and Samsung “Houdini” are dropping this fall. As well as a new device, the Motorola “Morrison” during the holiday season 2009, looking very much like the TMobile Wing. Still no schedule on the yet unnamed Huawei touchscreen device that looks oh-so-iPhone-like. Really looking forward to seeing more specs on the Motorola handset to see what they’re bringing to the Android party. Yup, that’s a grand total of 5 new handsets more or less confirmed coming to T-Mobile USA within the next 8 months or so.

New Samsung Android Phone? Maybe.

March 17th, 2009

I’m really going to have to take the skeptical route on this one. You’ve all seen the above picture making it’s round on the blogs. Honestly, it looks like someone took a cameraphone picture of an icon on a CRT monitor. Now I’m not saying it’s fake, just that I’m not going to go spreading this around as news and shout out specs till there’s more solid details. We know that Samsung is working on Android devices. And we haven’t seen any solid evidence yet, so it’s understandablethe fanboys are hungry for whatever they can get their hands on. If this picture turns out to be real, and this is the new Samsung Android phone, headed to Sprint or elsewhere, then great. But blurry pictures never really got me excited about a new handset.

Samsung Jumping Into Android With New Handset

January 19th, 2009

A source at Samsung has said they are working on a new Android handset for Sprint and T-Mobile. It is not immediately clear if it will be a new handset or an Instinct or Omnia running Android. But early reports are that it will be a full touchscreen model. If released soon, this will be Sprint’s first Android phone and T-Mobile’s second.

“We are accelerating the development process for Google phone in order to meet the specific need of local carriers,”

Hopefully this means they are pushing to get this out soon. With all the buzz around Android, it will be nice to see new hardware running the OS. Samsung has yet to announce an official press release on the matter.
