Uh oh, looks like the Motorola Droid Bionic may be in trouble. Apparently there’s an internal memo (seen above) telling stores to pull the phone and signage from the shelves, stating the phone is “unsellable” but no specific reason is given. Although the Droid Bionic
has been recently released, there’s been no major issues we’ve heard about aside from the occasional 4G LTE connectivity hiccup that seems to be happening with all Verizon 4G devices.
Another plausible explanation is that the Droid Bionic is overshadowed by the recently announced Droid RAZR, but obviously they would want to sell as many Bionics as they could before the RAZR is released next month. A tipster has also pointed out that the memo may have originated at Radio Shack and may not affect the phone at all, just something specific to Radio Shack. We’re really not sure of the entire scope of the situation, but we may find out something soon.
UPDATE: A commenter on Twitter pointed us to this post on MyDroidWorld that states that the Bionic displays and signage have been pulled due to supply issues. Motorola can’t keep up with the demand for the Bionic, therefore stores are not advertising it heavily. Several posters on XDA-Developers have confirmed their local Verizon stores are no longer displaying the phone. The explanation comes from MyDroidWorld’s local Verizon store management, however it seems a bit fishy to us. A memo states specifically the Bionic is “unsellable”, yet the reason for pulling signage and displays is because it’s selling too many? Something just doesn’t add up here.
Got a better pic of the screenshot from a Radio Shack employee. Direct2U is Radio Shack’s ordering system:
