Aside from the household name attached to it, one of the biggest things that help kickstart Amazon’s Android Appstore was the bonus of a free paid app every day. Free is nice, but the app was only available for 24 hours, and if you missed it, tough luck. A lesser known name, GetJar has just launched their GetJar Gold service, which is a catalog of premium paid apps available for absolutely free.
GetJar has offered free premium apps in the past, most notably Angry Birds, but usually in limited time promotions. GetJar Gold was initially launched with about 50 apps, but that includes top quality big names like Fruit Ninja, Paper Camera, Age Of Zombies and TuneIn Radio Pro. GetJar plans on adding more apps each week, and they will be available for free forever, something you won’t find over at Amazon. Something else different from Amazon is how developers get paid. With Amazon’s free app promotions, the app publisher gets nothing during the free period. The only thing they get is the free exposure provided by Amazon, perhaps with a side dish of feedback headaches or bad reviews. Meanwhile GetJar pays the developers each time their free app is downloaded. Using inline ads, other apps are promoted within GetJar Gold, which in turn allows GetJar to pay developers for offering their premium apps. Make sense? Certainly a lot more sense than developers getting nothing.
We added it up, and all of the current Gold apps would cost over $78 total if all purchased separately. So get to grabbing some new apps. You can currently access GetJar Gold through their website, mobile site or via their stand-alone Android app.
