Distimo, an app store analytics group, recently published a report about the ecosystems of various mobile app stores. Although the Apple iPhone app store remains largest overall, it seems that Android has surpassed the iPhone for the number of free applications available. The Android Market has also seen a 16% increase in number of overall applications available over the past month. And according to trends, should nearly overtake the iPhone app store in number of apps some time this summer. Although the number off applications doesn’t speak anything to the quality of apps, we all know there’s loads of horrible applications on both platforms. It’s still an indicator of how fast the ecosystem is growing.
It’s no secret that the growth of the Android platform has been stellar in the past year. And the growth just seems to continue. Relative newcomers such as Blackberry’s App World and the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace are showing a lot of growth in terms of percentage points, but are still a drop in the bucket compared to the two horse race of Apple vs Android.
