How To: Manually update your Motorola Backflip to Android 2.1 Eclair

Don’t feel like waiting a couple more days for the official update to be released? Of course not, so we got you covered.

First off, you’re gonna need the update file, grab it here.

Now, if you downloaded it on your computer, connect your phone via USB and copy the file to the root directory of your SD card, not inside any sub-directories. If you downloaded it on your phone, use a file manager application to move it from “/downloads” to “/”.

At this point Motorola recommends doing a power cycle. So turn your phone off then turn it on again.

Are we back? Ok great. Now the fun part. Go to Settings > About Phone > Check For Updates. If you have the file in the correct location, and the exact filename is then your phone should start displaying installation instructions. Yes, it will take a while, don’t freak out if your phone is stuck on the carrier logo screen for 10 minutes, this is normal. When the update is done, your Backflip will reboot. Then you can login to MotoBlur again and get all synced up.

And it’s already been confirmed that the update is fully rootable using Visionary, available in the Android Market.
