Android phones now outselling the iPhone

According  to NPD Group, Android OS has surpassed the iPhone in terms of consumer sales in the first quarter, 2010.

The main driver of this, of course, is the carriers. The iPhone is available only on the AT&T network, whereas Android phones are prevalent, if at least available on all others including Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.

Even AT&T is now offering an Android model, the Motorola BackFlip, with more expected to be available in the summer.

Verizon is the big driver of this, looking to catch up with AT&T in terms of their smart phone sales. Overall, AT&T accounts for 32% of the smartphone market, Verizon, 30%, T-Mobile 17%, and Sprint 15%. Verizon just expanded their buy-one-get-one free promotion to all other handsets as well.
