Question of the day: How many US Android users have the HTC Hero?
All of you should know what the HTC Hero is, arguably the sleekest, most powerful and sexiest Android handset available on the market today. You’ve seen the pictures, the videos, the specs. We all drooled over the HTC Sense UI, and some of you may have installed a hacked Hero ROM on your T-Mobile G1 or MyTouch.
So far, the Hero has only been released by carriers in Europe, such as T-Mobile UK, and Orange. But it has been available via eBay and other third party sellers to US residents. Although the 3G bands are not compatible with AT&T or T-Mobile, unlocked European versions can be used fine on EDGE and WiFi.
So, the question of the day is: How many of you in the US are using the HTC Hero?
Let us know in the comments if you have one or are planning to buy one. Also if you have AT&T or T-Mobile. And of course, how do you like it.
I don’t have one but I’m holding out for this one. My contract with my current phone runs up in 3 weeks. I hate that there aren’t more android devices out already. I’ll have to keep waiting and holding out for this. I’ll camp out overnight if I have to.
I’m not in america but in australia this phone is great. It works better than any of my other HTC phones and has good reception. Can’t wait for more android phones to reach australia
I just ordered one tonight. I was holding out for a more powerful Android phone with a QWERTY, but just couldn’t wait any longer when I ran into some extra cash – I just simply couldn’t resist. I will give it up in a heartbeat though, when another phone comes along that is just as powerful with a QWERTY keyboard. My G1 just wasn’t cutting it anymore. The Motorola Sholes would have been perfect. Damn you, Verizon…
I am one of those who has a hacked version of Hero on my G1 and I love it! Apps2SD is awesome, sense UI is awesome, and I love how most everything is accessible by widgets. Overall, its a great OS….
I’m from Chicago and, love the HTC hero edge doesn’t bother me for the most part Cause most of the apps I use r already on the hero as widgets ,also everywhere u go there is WiFi, I love going to tmobile store and seeing there reaction , they even tried to trade me two mytouch for my Hero.
Just shipped a package with a Hero from Norway to my old school buddy now living in San Francisco.
I second that, Jamey — about the QWERTY. I am also waiting for that, it would make email/terminal/ssh-work so much easier! But until that happens I’m a happy Hero user.
It’s a truly amazing piece of technology. Even with the bugs.
Come on HTC — release that new updated ROM they are rocking in Japan already!
I’m from New Jersey and got the HTC Hero on 8/14/09. It is awesome! The best phone I’ve ever owned. I have T-mobile and have a Sidekick LX and the G1. Since my sidekick was rarely use since I got my G1, I purchased the Hero after seeing the video’s and write-up on various sites. I love it, it’s hard to put down. I was at first a little reserved about not having a Qwerty keyboard, but with all the other features it has, you get used to it. I have the white one, which is fine cause as soon as it’s released here, I will get the black! Thanks HTC for such an AWESOME phone!
I am in Seattle and just got my HTC Hero and a trip overseas. Love the phone, haven’t been able to put it down yet. A little bummed about being stuck on the Edge but it still beats my blackberry pearl! Still exploring the phone, but right now, it’s still pretty darn cool!
Anyone know of an msn messenger widget?
Ive had one for about two weeks now – I LOVE IT ! Its the best phone Ive ever owned by a long way

USA citizen, born and raised in New Jersey, but currently living in the UK doing my masters for a year. I bought an unlocked Hero from amazon UK and its amazing. Bare in mind, I have not updated my phone in 6 years. Yes I went from an old Nokia to a Motorola Razor when it first came out, and now I have my Hero.
I needed it to be unlocked so i could use it for when I came back to the states. However, I did not know that 3G would not work in the states. Does this mean I have to go with AT&T for EDGE, or does T mobile offer some data plan for a non 3g device?
The EDGE on the Hero will work with either AT&T or T-Mobile, they both use the same frequencies for EDGE, but it won’t work on either of their 3G networks. If you can live with EDGE, then T-Mobile probably has a cheaper data plan. Or you may want to consider selling it and trading up for a US version when it comes out.
I would most likely stay with T-mobile (keep cell number back home) when I come back to the states.
I will be able to live with EDGE, I don’t heavily require data usage when I am not connected to WIFI. How much slower is EDGE compared to 3G; for instance pulling Emails? Or using Google maps?

I have my HTC Hero here in Brazil. A marvel of equipment, a little slow yet, but will surely improve. If I were to compare with my HTC TyTn II, he is still at a disadvantage, because the usability of Windows Mobile is still better.
